    Welcome

"I was very impressed to hear that you will be running the 'A to Z of Marathons' next year. This will certainly be a Herculean task and congratulations on all of your efforts to raise money for Parkinson's Disease. Good luck!" - Two Time Olympic Gold Medalist Lord Sebastian Coe

My name is Dan Wilson and I would like to welcome you to therunningdan.com

In 2007 I will be running 26 marathons - "The A to Z of Marathons".

I will run one marathon for each letter of the alphabet, in different countries at extreme temperatures on unforgiving terrains. No matter what the conditions I will complete 26 marathons this year. You can check out all my marathons in my itinerary.

Every great quest needs a great cause and for me, that cause is the Parkinson's Disease Society. Parkinson's is a horrible disease for which there is no cure. It is a fluctuating neurological condition that affects all sufferers differently. Its symptoms include stiffness, tiredness, depression, balance problems, loss of facial expressions, speech difficulties, slowness of movement, shaking, muscular pain and rigidity.

I knew very little about Parkinson's disease, until my Dad was diagnosed with it in 2001. It is hard to watch someone you love suffer with this degenerative disease. There is little you can do to help and it is frustrating, but through this campaign, I hope to make a difference.

I hope to raise as much funding for the Parkinson's Disease Society as possible, as well as increasing awareness and understanding.

I need you to sponsor me.

For information on how to become a corporate sponsor of the A to Z of Marathons, please see the Support Dan! page.

100% of your donation goes to the Parkinson's Disease Society. Every donation, no matter how big or small, counts towards a better future for those suffering with Parkinson's disease.

Please email any messages or questions you have for me to dan@therunningdan.com

Thanks for visiting the site, I hope you enjoy it,

Thanks,

PS spread the word, tell your friends!

Caring for a Parkinson sufferer takes patience more than anything else. The disease does not stop us doing many things we would normally do mostly because we do not let it.

Life does slow down however, (maybe a good thing), as in walking pace, when I find I am talking to myself, appearing to have dementia, because my husband is 50 yards behind! I also have to remember to give him time to reply to my incessant talking and questions.

As the symptons evolved I thought I had lost the person I loved behind a marked visual alteration (my husband lost his wonderful smile), and slowness of movement for a once very active person. I soon realised however it was just a cruel facade and he was still there beneath this restrictive and degenerative disease.

We know it is going to get worse so we are living and enjoying for today.

I was diagnosed as a Parkinsons Disease "sufferer" over 5 years ago at the age of 56.

It's quite remarkable how much you focus on the future and wonder how and when the physical limitations will kick in. I have to say its a sneaky, creeping limitation imposer!

You get dealt the hand you have to play, there are of course worse cards to be dealt, but the sheer volume of sufferers who could have a better quality of life makes Parkinson's a really important target to try and have an impact upon.
